Effects of Indoor Plants on Alleviation of Symptoms of the Worker¢¥s Visual Display Terminal Syndrome

Abstract
In order to investigate the effects of indoor plants on the alleviation of symptoms of the worker¢¥s visual display terminal (VDT) syndrome, tear break up time, eye blinking frequency, degree of visual fatigue, frequency and electrical amplitude of the electromyelography of upper trapezius and levator palpebrae superioris muscle were measured and compared between two groups exposed to VDT or indoor plants. In the group exposed to indoor plants compared to VDT, tear break up time appeared to be prolonged, which indicates to prevent dry eye syndrome by prolonging formation of tear membrane essential to protection of cornea, and decreased eye blinking frequency and degree of visual fatigue appeared to help alleviation of symptoms of VDT syndrome related to eyes. And also in the same group, both frequency and electrical amplitude of the electromyelography of upper trapezius and levator palpebrae superioris muscle decreased, which means that eyestrains and symptoms of shoulder arm syndrome are decreased. These findings indicated that indoor plants had the possibility to prevent or alleviate symptoms of VDT syndrome.
